Not Working with Android Auto? Restart Your Device
Hopefully, it’s just a temporary glitch with Android Auto on your phone when it doesn’t work. If you encounter a problem with Android Auto, you should always restart the device.
This can usually be done by holding the Power button until you see a menu appear. If Restart is available, choose that; otherwise, tap Shut Down and then turn your phone on again after a few seconds. If Android Auto still doesn’t work correctly after that, try using it again.

Install the Android Auto App on Your Phone
Android Auto might need to be updated if it has stopped functioning properly after previously working. To check for Android updates, go to Settings > System > Advanced > System Update, and install any that are available. The names of these menus may differ from model to model.
You can then check for app updates by going to Google Play Store. Choose Manage apps & devices from your profile picture in the top-right corner. If everything is up to date, you will see All apps up to date or Updates available with a note about the number of pending updates otherwise. Click here if an update is available.
Tap Update to install Android Auto if it appears. You should also update Google Play and Google Search if you’re updating core system apps. Whenever possible. In this way, problems like the inability to use voice commands in Android Auto can be fixed.
Once updates are installed, open the Android Auto app again. You may need to accept an update to the user agreement before continuing to use the service. Major updates may cause Android Auto to stop working.

Make Sure Android Auto Is Compatible with Your Phone
To see if Android Auto is compatible with your device, you should make sure that your phone works with the feature. Google’s help page on Android Auto states that you need a device with Android 6 Marshmallow or higher to use it, along with an active cellular data plan. On Android 9 and earlier, you need to install the Android Auto app from the Play Store to use the feature. If you’re on Android 10 or later, the ability for Android Auto to connect to your car’s display is built-in. You can also use the app on your phone screen if you have an Android 10 or a newer phone.

You must have a compatible vehicle (or aftermarket head unit) if Android Auto does not appear on your car’s display. You may not be able to use Android Auto even if your vehicle has a USB port.
Look for your vehicle on Google’s list of Android Auto-compatible cars. Generally, the feature is only available on cars built in 2016 and 2017. If Android Auto is supported on your car, check the owner’s manual.
A stereo that works with Android Auto can be purchased if your car doesn’t support it. On the same Google page, you can see a list of approved models; they can be purchased at sites such as Crutchfield.
